The Rat's Return. [Read, main Halloween plot]

Oh how Fallabella cursed herself! Careless! Completely careless she had been. It was been a dark night, mere weeks from Halloween. The wind whistled around the houses and bars in the port. Snuffing out candles and blowing hats from owner's heads as it went. Twisting along until it came to a tall mouse. She was wearing leather boots on her paws. In her hand was an extravagantly long cigarette holder, in that was an equally long cigarette. The smoke didn't stay long around her, the wind whipped it away. It was surprising she had been able to light it in the first place.

Fallabella sighed, dropping the cigarette into a large puddle. T'was no use, it was far to windy for even the smallest smoke ring. After a moment of thought she headed down the cobbled street that lead down the the beach. The wind would be much worse than it was here, but the sea was calling her. It would be worth the battering. The smell of smoke and alcohol faded, giving away to the sharp smell of the sea. Fallabella had lived under the floorboards of the Mary-Ann for many years. She knew the streets of the port like the back of her hand. Soon the sand would be beneath her boots.

As she wandered along the beach, something didn't feel completely right... It was almost as if she was being watched. As cliché as that sounded. Though, thinking back, perhaps that wasn't the best way to describe it. It was the kind of feeling that made the hair along the back of your neck stand up with it's complete strangeness. Implacable, infact. Had Fallabella known better, she'd have known it was utterly placeable. Infact it meant she was very close to a glitch. As it's a very difficult feeling to describe, none do. As such, no-one is ever aware of a glitch until they fall through it.

Strangely it had been an average day before this; she'd awoken underneath the floorboards of the pub where she lived. She'd been awoken by the sound of several loud voices. One coincidentally had been Mousen's though really that was irrelevant. They'd talked about seeing something strange, or whatever shapeshifters talked about nowadays. There had then been a huge fuss (making it to be honest a slightly un-average day) when Prince Polaris walked in. Fallabella had no time for politics, though she had to admit she was a little bit impressed. That in itself was an achievement. The mouse was known for being hard to please. As the males that constantly tried to woo her soon found out.

"Hello?" she called. Knowing full well there was no-one there. She could now feel there was something very off about this place in the beach. It was just by a set of coves. Coves known for being full of glitches. Though, the thought hadn't come to mind, Fallabella walked further down the empty beach. Aware in some part of her subconscious that she should turn back. Not bothering to heed her subconscious thoughts the mouse trod over to a small cove. Half of her dawn to it, half of her very wary.

There was then a sudden feeling of falling. It didn't last long, before she could even open her mouth to scream, or even draw breath to scream. She found herself in a small town square, herself knee deep in the town's fountain. As cliché as it sounds, Fallabella definitely wasn't in Nyx anymore.

(I'd like to point out here, it isn't cool to smoke. It's very bad for you. Don't try that at home kiddies. Fallabella only smokes 'cause she doesn't care.)

Chapter one, part two.

Post by MousenHeath on Wed Oct 06, 2010 12:11 am

It wasn't that he was a bad rat. No, it were possible he had a good heart underneath the mask. They all wore masks here, Peaches Pablo prided himself on having the ugliest one to date. He knew masks very well, after all he did run a mask shop in the darker part of town. The white/grey cobbles were uncomfortable underfoot as he walked the mask pulled right over his face, his eyes were obscured. Had you been able to see his eyes you would have discovered he was blind in one eye.

The night air was cold, foul smelling gas lamps cast a yellow sickly glow over this part of the island. Towards the other side of town the gas lamps were replaced with lamps of gloworms, they cast a clear white light. He could only wish for so much here, shadows leapt from every corner making him rigid with fright. One paw clutched his mask, something he did when he was nervous, the other paw held a well worn pipe, every so often he would place it in his mouth. As he walked his pace increased, obviously he was fearing a creature of the night. Pablo (as he preferred to be known) wasn't a coward, he just really didn't want to end up as lunch. Or supper for that matter. He feared death to be quite frank and he didn't want to end up on the menu at any time of day. The walls of this part of the circular island were white washed, some where fading to grey. Everything was white. Peaches Pablo stuck out like a sore thumb, anyone travelling through these streets did. Occasionally on the walls were drawing in black chalk or ink, they sometimes depicted everyday life, many of them seemed to have shadowy figures lurking in the background. How strange. All the people in the pictures were masked, just as Pablo was.

His raggedy ears pricked, listening, he was sure he heard a noise somewhere. His heart skipped a beat as he heard it again. In a moment of self preservation he pressed himself up against a wall, if anything was there it would find him in a flash, because of his loudly beating heart and the smell of both patchouli and marijuana he gave off. After a moment he was left petrified by fear as a shadowy figure moved past him. After it had gone Peaches Pablo fell to the floor in relief. Thank god for his mask.

This was the Illa de Enmascarada or the Isle of the Masquerade depending on your tongue. A perfectly circular island, split in two. A wall ran around the middle of the island and separated one side from the other. The light side was made up purely of white washed houses, they lacked any glass in the windows, only white wooden shutters. The houses ranged from one to seven stories. Each had perfectly square tiny windows and they lacked a door, though salt was spread across every thresh hold. No-one knew what the dark side held. Some said it was the mirror image of the light side. The houses lay in a close packed, maze-like layout it was very easy to get lost within the walls of the city. The city itself was riddled with tunnels matching the layout of the houses exactly. One would expect the other side of the city to be exactly the same.

These masks that the townsfolk wore were much different to normal masks. You had to have a gift to make the masks, to make them real. You could hide behind masks, and in hiding yourself, who you were, each mask had a name. Each mask had a personality. Each mask was possibly as dangerous as the soulless shadows it protected you from. Especially Pablo's masks, they had a reputation, still his prices were cheap. People would rather face the dangers of his twisted masks than the sad wrath of the sad, shadowy creatures that made the right side of the island their home.

Pablo was right by the wall. The thing that separated the dark from the light, in it's center was a huge door. It was locked tight, though that was no problem for the ethereal beasts that haunted the isle. As he came closer to the towns fountain his mouth opened in surprise. Was that a mouse (if it was a mouse it was a rather attractive one, he could see that much) in the fountain?

[End of Chapter one]

Re: The Rat's Return. [Read, main Halloween plot]

Upon hearing a noise Fallabella spun around only to find herself face-to-mask with Peaches Pablo. She slipped backwards, letting out a suprised yelp as she did so. Swiftly Pablo placed a paw over her mouth. "SHH! What the 'ell are you doing without mask?!" he whispered harshly.
"What? Who are you? And where the hell am I?" She growled, batting his paw away.
"A mask. Something to hide you from the shadows. Where are you? You're in deep water Princess. Trouble." After a moment he pulled the mask of his own face, two dark eyes looked sullenly down at Fallabella. "Wear this, for heavens sake. You'd better hope we can get to the mask shop before the shadows 'ave me for a light snack." There was a slight lilt to his voice, almost... Mexican infact.
"I'm not wearing that."
Pablo sighed. "You're not from here are you? Well you'd better learn fast, Love. Put it this way; 'alf this dreaded placed is cursed. Or something like that, and if we don't want to end up like those on the other side of this wall you'd better wear a mask or be a damn fast runner, understand?"
After a moment of consideration Fallabella looked up to Pablo's face then down to the mask. Her paw's grabbed the mask, before slotting it on her face. She refrained from glancing at her reflection, for she knew she wouldn't like what she saw there.
"You'd better be a damn fast runner." With that she took off her cigarette holder behind her ear and one hand placed on the side of the mask. Pablo quickly followed after her, the shop just had to be this close to the divide. Oh it just had to be.

He was soon ahead of Fallabella, it wasn't long before he realized they weren't alone in the dark streets. Among the shadows the stinking gas lamps threw up against the walls were darker entities that swallowed up the light. They crawled, sweeping over everything, sometimes patterns formed within their depths, faces, expressions. "Sh*t!" Pablo yelled. He was in for it now. This was it. This wasn't like the last time; this was much worse. He'd been out numbered by them before and survived, but this? This was ridiculous. The thought of getting out of this without a mask was almost hilarious.

"Oi!" Fallabella stood on top of the wall, the grey wall which everyone guarded with reverence and fear. She wasn't wearing a mask either, it hung lose in her paw. She pressed a cigarette to her lips, seemingly unaware of the danger she was in. Peaches Pablo didn't even have time to admire her perfect hourglass figure. He just took advantage of the moment and ran.

Fallabella fumbled with the mask, her haste loosing her footing on the wall. She tipped over landing ungainly, just managing to land on her feet. Mice are much better at that than cats don't you know. The mask fell too, just hitting her shoulder. She scrambled to pick it up, putting it back on her face. Miraculously the cigarette holder had stayed behind her ear. She allowed herself a small smile before running to catch up with Pablo.

He didn't speak, just nodded to her as she ran by his side. Pablo could just see the corner upon which the tiny mask shop was situated. He turned the corner, unable to even let out a squeak of surprise as a shadow lunged for him, in panic he managed to fling himself into the shop, though not before one of it's very real claws had dug into his shoulder. The salt line was thankfully undamaged and it was barely a second before he managed to find a mask to hide under.

Fallabella was barely a minute behind him. "Hello?" she called nervously. She'd seen the shadow outside and it were obvious who it's target had been.
"Here." Pablo replied shortly.
"Oh Nyxia, you're bleeding everywhere!"
"What?"
"You've cut your shoulder."
"I don't care about that, you said Nyxia, as in Nyx, right?" There was no mistaking the excitement in his tone.
"You? You're-"
"Glitched too, yes. Do you know where exactly you ended up? We could get back." For all these years Pablo had waited for a chance, some hope of being able to return to his home. He'd made a living for himself here now, not to say he wanted to stay here. "It would be better waiting until morning I suppose." After a moment he rest his chin in his hands, sighing.
"I'm Fallabella." she said, the slight French touch to her voice could easily be picked out. She reached over and handed him the ugly mask she usually wore.
"We'd better find you a mask."

The mask shop was an interesting place, small. So small the average human had to bend down to get in it. Every surface was covered with masks, the occasional mirror was slotted in and stools of different sizes stood on the floor. Ladders lead up to the top shelves. Masks, from the beautiful to grotesque, some would happily fit a moth, others could fit elephants. He hopped from stool to stool and along a few ladders until he found what he was looking for. A small mask, with dark curling tendrils around it, beautiful in it's simplicity. With flourish he presented it to her, bowing comically as he did so.
"Thank you."
"Don't worry about it, you did help me earlier." Clearly admitting that Fallabella had saved his life was something he wasn't keen on doing.
"You never really told me where I am, Pablo." Fallabella stated, fishing a packet of cigarettes out of her boots. She could tell Pablo wouldn't mind. The over powering smell of insense in the shop didn't quite cover the smell of some rather dubious smoking substances.
"It's a long story."
"I've got time."
"I've got plenty more excuses."
"Just tell me, Pablo."
He wasn't one to give in so quickly, but as he'd just discovered he was completely powerless against that tone of voice.
